Rec List from the F List
I hope everyone had a fantastic festive season - or at least some moments of fun for those who really weren't looking forward to it this year *hugs* - and I wish you all the very best for the New Year!

I promised you a rec list of one of my favourite stories from each member of my f-list and here it is. For some of you this was really hard to do because you've written an awful lot - I hadn't realised just how much some of you have written and my mind boggles - for some of you this was really hard to do because I like too many of your stories, and for all of you this was really hard because I always find it difficult choosing just one of anything! That said, I hope this list give a happy start to you New Year.

(In alphabetical order by author. Click on title of fic for link. Ratings provided for all, word counts when given. Then a brief summary, why I favourite it, and, in brackets, the mood.)

BY [livejournal.com profile] afterthree : Nothing a Good Imperius Wouldn't Solve (R)
A young Severus making choices, temptation, Lily, and fantastically written. (angsty-ish)

BY [livejournal.com profile] allie_meril : where we start from (PG13, 1200 words)
The end of the first war, written from multiple viewpoints. Sweet, sad, funny, beautifully written. (sad, but ends with hope/joy)

BY [livejournal.com profile] cuban_sombrero : Breaking Down The Paper Walls (PG, 556 words)
In the early days of Remus/Sirius Remus has no words at all. Written from Remus' point of view with some wonderful descriptions. (a nice bit of happy)

BY [livejournal.com profile] darth_kittius : Fridays with Luna (G, 1492 words)
A lovely friendship grows between George and Luna after the events of Deathly Hallows. Look out for the fantastic little bits of Percy as well. (Luna takes away the sad)

BY [livejournal.com profile] duol2fic : Catalyst (PG, short)
"James knows what love is." (That's the second generation James.) Lovely word-painting. (not a happy fic)

BY [livejournal.com profile] featherxquill : The Minister's Wife (NC-17)
Rufus Scrimgeour/Rita Skeeter: "every success has a price". Because [livejournal.com profile] featherxquillwrites a fantastic Rita, because she makes me believe in this relationship, because it's a clever story. (and the NC-17 is for the hot).

BY [livejournal.com profile] hpuckle : Never Have I Ever (PG13, 2716 words)
The Gryffindor boys have some fun, with a helping of Ron/Harry and a fun Neville moment. Because it's fun *grins*. (fun, you getting this?)

BY [livejournal.com profile] inell< : Always a Bridesmaid (adult, long)
Hermione is a bridesmaid at yet another wedding, and flirting with Cedric leads to something more. [livejournal.com profile] inell has written so very much yet, but I have a soft spot for this fun, flirty romance with it's great characterisation and hot ending. (fun, romantic)

BY [livejournal.com profile] inksplotched : of course (G, short)
Young Teddy and Victoire. Sweet, cute and possibly my most favourite valentine's fic. (cute and funny)

BY [livejournal.com profile] kath_ballantyne : who does not write stories. So look at this happy autumn art (Hermione/Ron, G), this hot art (Charlie/Harry, R), and this very hot art (Ron/Kingsley, very NC-17).
I'm sorry, I was supposed to rec just one? Yeah, right. *grins* (happy, hot, and very hot, You got that?)

BY [livejournal.com profile] kentish_queen : Almost Perfect (PG, 259 words)
Ginny's wedding day is almost perfect. Because someone had to say it and this is said well. (sweet-sad)

BY [livejournal.com profile] leven_kemal : Snarge (PG15, 5400)
Firefly: someone's got to clean up the mess after Crow goes through the jet engine. Read this, if only because the Wash narration is fantastic. (disgusting, funny, thought-provoking)

BY [livejournal.com profile] luvscharlie : Stuck (PG, 944 words)
Charlie, Neville and the Weasley twin's newest invention. [livejournal.com profile] luvscharlie has written a lot - off the top of my head this is her most recent fic that I love. (bittersweet) Ahem, I'm assuming you've all read the previously recommended We Start and End with Family (NC-17). No? Go read!

BY [livejournal.com profile] msmoocow : Dreaming Through the Twilight (R)
This, for me, is THE Ariana Dumbledore fic. (sad, but ends with hope)

BY [livejournal.com profile] opheliet : (Lily) (PG, 100 words)
"Lily has taken to visiting graveyards..." Everything that is needed to be said and in such a short space. (twists the heart)

BY [livejournal.com profile] risiepookie : None For Me, Thank You (PG, 1592 words)
Ron/Hermione, Harry/Ginny, hidden grief surfacing at the worst time. Risie writes the hard topics with the touch they deserve and need. (angst with hope and friendship)

BY [livejournal.com profile] sarahetc : The Legend of the Ceremonial Flying Pineapple (NC-17, 7288 words)
Wash's first night aboard Serenity. Because it has a brilliant Wash narration? Because it has the best frisking-the-pilot scene ever? Because of the wonderfully quirky title? Because of the hot? Because of the Wash? Hey, go read and decide for yourself! (fun, and hot, and wonderfully quirky all round)

BY [livejournal.com profile] snegurochka_lee : Five Women Who Hate Fleur Delacour (PG 13, 7300 words)
See the title? Lee writes less gen then anything else, but i'm drawn to her genfic most of all, perhaps because here her talents for characterisation are best displayed. In this case it's specifically the characterisation of woman, for which I could also point to Five Dead Women (R) or Five Stories about Gwenog Jones (PG13), but this especially is THE femgenfic in the Potter fandom for me. (thought-provoking, funny, clever)

BY [livejournal.com profile] sugar_fey :Light Surrounding You (PG13)
Firefly: who knew being shot had its advantages... I can't help it: of all the fics she's written this one still owns me. Maybe it's the Wash narration, maybe it's the dodo bar, the moonbrained stunt mutiny or the witty dialogue. I just have to keep rereading it in an effort to figure it out. *grins* (fun, romantic, funny)

BY [livejournal.com profile] tartanshell : The Wisdom to Know the Difference (PG13, novella)
Spider-Man/Daredevil/X-Men crossover, but you only need to have seen the films, and the prequel is Office Hours (PG13). Perhaps the best crossover ever, this story revolves around the age-old problem 'to tell or not to tell', featuring friendship, hilarity and real feel-good moments. I love me some guaranteed-to-cheer-me-up fic. :o) (sweet without too much fluff, a little angst in parts maybe, hilarious moments)

BY [livejournal.com profile] thesteppyone : All I Need (PG13, 1200 words)
Harry Potter and Molly Weasley not so long after the final battle in Deathly Hallows. For the details and the heart-tugging, because steppy knows just how to do that. (angst, but not all 'bad' I think)

BY [livejournal.com profile] velvetmouse : For Want of a... (PG)
Maurader era, James and Sirius stuck to a ceiling. Pranks, Severus has a great part to play without him or his character being mistreated, and just plain fun. (because a happy new year list of stories should end with happy, and fun)

Welcome to 2009 folks. Have a good one. :o)

i just have to add that i liked snegurocka lee's barmaid EVEN MORE than five women who hate fleur delacour. have you read it?

will be checking out all these recs eventually!
inkvoices: girl reading[personal profile] inkvoices on January 1st, 2009 11:20 pm (UTC)
Yes I have, but I preferred 'Five Women...' better i'm afraid. *grins* I think the inter-weaving in 'Five Women...' of the relationships between all the characters and the way they were all tired together at the end, with McGonagall's opinion of them all and then talking to Fleur who has a 'I hate women like that' opinon of her own, was more cleverly done - a better style? - than 'Barmaid', anf whilst I enjoyed 'Barmaid' I liked the character interactions more in 'Five Women...' too. Why do you prefer 'Barmaid'? *is curious*

I knew I had fantastic writers on my f-list but I didn't realise that so many of them had written so much! This is by no means a definitive kind of list, but they're some favourites of mine and I do hope they encourage you to check out the authors and stories you haven't read before. :o)

Thank you, hon! That is probably the fic I'm most (or second most) proud of this last year! x

You're welcome. I really enjoyed it, so I had to share!
*is curious* When you place this fic as second which one do you see as first? (Because I'll have to make sure I've read that one too *grins*)
[identity profile] hpuckle.livejournal.com on January 5th, 2009 10:30 am (UTC)
I think my favourite is To Show You How Much I Love You (http://community.livejournal.com/hpucklefics/9540.html). It's Ron/Hermione, just over 1000 words, rated PG and is more of a Ron daddy!fic :)

xxx

Oh, I remember that one, with the cards and the glitter. That was a cute one. :o)

Happy New Year.

The scary thing is, I hadn't realised how much I'd written until you posted this and I went back to check. :DD

And a Happy New Year to you too!

*grins* I knew I had some fantastic writers on my f-list but not that so many of them had written so much. I was gettting towards the end of the month thinking 'I said I was going to rec a favourite from everyone so I have to have at least read a few of everyones' and staring at these long lists thinking 'when the hell did all these appear? How did I miss these?' LOL.

(I did that 'first line from twenty of your fics' meme a while back. I thought I'd manage about ten, and did a lot of blinking when I realised I had enough for twenty.)

Happy New Year!

Thanks for the rec, hon! I'm glad you like that fic so much, since I did write it especially for you!

And look! I'm using your icon!

And Happy New Year to you too!

Heh, I went back and reread the Wash-Luna story you wrote, and two Wash/Zoe fics, and tried oh so very hard to rec one of those instead, but no. The Moonbrained Stunt Muntiny owns me. *laughs* Really, I have so much appreciation of that story and it's Washly narrative.

Oooh, icon love! Hehe.
[identity profile] sugar-fey.livejournal.com on January 2nd, 2009 10:32 am (UTC)
Hee, this will now be my icon whenever I whinge about uni. ;)

I'm really proud of 'Light Surrounding You'. I worked so hard on it and did so many edits, so I'm glad that you rec'ed it! I think it's better than my other Firefly fics anyhow.
inkvoices: hp:snape poison potter[personal profile] inkvoices on January 3rd, 2009 11:11 pm (UTC)
Heh, now if there were lecturers like Snape...

Regardless of how well 'Light Surrounding You' was aimed at my personal likes *grins* I think I still prefer it over your over fics because the Wash narration, the voice and word choice, is just spot on.
[personal profile] snegurochka_lee on January 7th, 2009 03:57 pm (UTC)
Oh wow, this is so nice of you to do!! I'm sorry I missed it last week - I've been out of town and AFK since New Year's. Happy New Year to you! And thank you for the rec! :)
inkvoices[personal profile] inkvoices on January 7th, 2009 05:15 pm (UTC)
I wanted to gift something to all my f-list, and this way everyone got comments and recs. Plus I got to catch up on fic ;o)
Hope you had a nice time away and a Happy New Year!
You, Ms Rec-er, need reccing your own self. Often. :oD
[identity profile] sarahetc.livejournal.com on January 11th, 2009 04:16 pm (UTC)
I am trawling your journal for icons and I realized I missed this post and Woohoo! Instant bookmark! This is great and a great idea!

And thanks very much for the rec. I appreciate it!
inkvoices: F:wash wannafly?[personal profile] inkvoices on January 11th, 2009 09:26 pm (UTC)
Yeah, but now what do I do for next years festive gifts? *grins* I wanted to give something to everyone, and everyone likes comments, recs of self and recs to read. win-win. :o)

And that is my favourite story written by you that I've read - so far ;o)
[identity profile] sarahetc.livejournal.com on January 12th, 2009 09:39 pm (UTC)
You do it again next year! And in perpetuity! It really is the gift that keeps on giving.

You favorite is the pineapple smut! It's the most bookmarked of my stories (not that many are). People seem to love it. Fanon inversion for the win, I guess.
inkvoices: F:wash fangirls[personal profile] inkvoices on January 13th, 2009 10:53 pm (UTC)
So long as I don't rec the same fics! *laughs*

It's the Wash narration and the humour of that one, and great dialogue and the best title ever. I think when faced with lots of fantastic fic if there's a humourous, fun story with a side of romance I'll favour that over the heavier stories. I really liked the one you wrote about Zoe getting a message from Wash after he died, but. Wash is dead. And cannot narrate. And has no pineapples.
[identity profile] sarahetc.livejournal.com on January 14th, 2009 01:16 am (UTC)
It's true. Dead men offer no pineapples.

You just have to hope your flist is prolific so you can rec a new story every year. You might put it on your calendar to start cracking the whip in August. "Flist! 146 days left until Christmas! WRITE!"
