Big Book List 2014
It's book list time again!

Fantastic = the best of the best. The ones that I felt the urge to tell everyone about, multiple times, including strangers on the bus. The ones that I bought other people because I had to share. The ones that I really, really enjoyed.
Great = the best of the rest. Books that I would reread, or lodged themselves in my head so thoroughly that rereading might be redundant.
Good = books that I enjoyed, but since book-lovers can't afford everything these ones you could save your money on and find them in the library.
Okay = books are books and therefore wonderful, but I can't help feeling that these ones could have been better.
The Bottom of the Pile = well if you have nothing else to read

Okay

The Maze Runner by James Dashner

And I have read a lot of graphic novels and comics this year. Especially good stuff: Pretty Deadly, The Fuse, Alex + Ada, The Wicked And The Devine, Night Post, Snowpiercer, Blue Is The Warmest Colour, Rat Queens, The Walking Dead, Saga, Lucifer, Lazarus, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Secret Avengers… I’ve read the first issue of Bitch Planet and I’m looking forward to more of that! I tried volume one of Fables, Casanova, and Y: The Last Man, but I’m not seeing the fuss. Marvel 1602, Hawkeye: Blind Spot, Peter Panzerfaust, The Mystery Society were okay.

Any recommendations from your 2014 year of reading?

Th Maze Runner is the actual worst. I hated that book with a passion. Y The Last Man, however, is the shit. :P But each to their own. I read Deathless and didn't really enjoy it for more than the wonderful sentence construction.

It's dreadful in so many ways, not the least of which is that the only girl could be replaced by a lamp. Meh. Y The Last Man is just so irritating, and I get that that's the point, but I'm pinning my hopes on Bitch Planet and Rat Queens for feminist comics this year. (Only one issue of Bitch Planet, but in Kelly Sue I place my trust, and eight issues of Rat Queens which are made of win.)

At least ou enjoyed the language. The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland In A Ship Of Her Own Making may be more up your street - I have that as an ebook or I'd lend that.

It's so bad I actually had a 10 minute rant my dad had to endure. :/ Haha.

Aww I love Y The Last Man so so so much. :(

I dunno, I was really put off her after finishing that book, so I wouldn't worry about it.

I would definitely rec Rachel Hartman's Seraphina if you haven't read it yet. It's sort of pseudo-Renaissance fantasy with music and magic and dragons, and the protagonist has a really great voice to follow.

How is Alex + Ada? I keep seeing it around but I've never picked up an issue. And can I ask where you found a copy of Six-Gun Snow White? I've been wanting to read it for a while but whenever I've checked Amazon it seems to be out of print or something.

Sounds fun; i'll add it to my goodreads :)

I wasn't sure about Alex + Ada at first, but it grew on me and i really want to see how it ends. Basically in a world of high tech and robots true AI is banned. Our protagonist's Gran buys him a robot because she believes it'll help post-girlfriend. only he endsup researching AI and down the rabbit hole he goes :)

Six-Gun i had to get as an ebook. The physical copy was a limited run, special edition thing i believe. Plus i find hardcopies of her stories really hard to get hold of in general :/

I think even the ebook is unavailable in the US right now, sigh. Maybe it'll be included the next time she publishes a short story collection.

Meh, it's available on amazon.co.uk .com looks like just an audible edition. waterstones.com and foyles have it as ebooks if these links work for non UK purchasing.

I'm with Terry Pratchett in that I like special editions of things but I don't like limited editions. Books should not be difficult to get hold of :S

Thank you, I'll check those out! Amazon UK wouldn't let me buy it because it recognized I was in the US, but I'll see if one of those works. :)
