you know that pacific rim/avengers thing I started on tuesday?
That moment when you get an AO3 alert saying that one of your favourite authors has just posted the first chapter of a fic that promises to be made of brilliance, but you're already writing a fic that is somewhat similiar, so you feel you can't read that chapter because it might influence your own fic and you don't want it to, but you really want to read that chapter, and you know for a fact that whatever they've written is bound to be far superior to anything that you could come up with anyway, so you may as well just give up on yours and read theirs, only you have over 5,000 words already written and you're at least focussing on a different main pairing, but new fic of brilliance and...

...yeah. That moment.

Also, on an far from unrelated note, I need a LJ mood that is 'headless chicken'.

That is indeed a problem. I know it well.

Which pairing is it for the fic by your fave author? And which pairing are you writing? *chinhands*
inkvoices: writers write[personal profile] inkvoices on July 28th, 2013 02:01 am (UTC)
They're writing Steve/Tony, but they're the type of author that writes huge, sprawling stories with many, many characters interacting that are more team with a pairing at the front that specifically just those two characters.

I'm writing Clint/Natasha. There are other characters in there, but I was hoping not to write an epic.

(This is all because of your promptathon prompt, y'know. That led to a pretty manip. That led to me going, 'what is this film?' and many, many people then telling me to watch it. And me watching it. Your. Fault. ;P )
[identity profile] sugar-fey.livejournal.com on July 28th, 2013 02:04 am (UTC)
Ooooh, I saw that fic. It's brilliant, even if Steve/Tony is not my thing.

I can't wait to read your fic! I'm sure it will be great.

This is all because of your promptathon prompt, y'know. That led to a pretty manip. That led to me going, 'what is this film?' and many, many people then telling me to watch it. And me watching it. Your. Fault. ;P

I regret nothing. ;)
inkvoices: ideas[personal profile] inkvoices on July 28th, 2013 02:11 am (UTC)
Argh, don't tempt me to read it any more than I already am!

So many promptathon prompts have bitten me, and I have other things to be doing, but I thought I'd take the chance and the deadline to try and get something done, whilst it's new and fresh in my head, so I'm determined at lest.

I regret nothing. ;) And I'm sure I deserve that lol.

...wait, why am I online at the same time as you? *checks clock* Ah. Good job it's the weekend.

That moment is tough...

I'm sure yours will be insanely brilliant!!!!

Haha! Headless chicken....
inkvoices: writers write[personal profile] inkvoices on July 28th, 2013 03:40 pm (UTC)
Aww, thank you :D I just want it do be done. I have such a block when it comes to finishing things. Not writers block, I always have ideas, just the leaping around that means no completing. Gah.
[identity profile] cybermathwitch.livejournal.com on July 28th, 2013 03:46 am (UTC)
YES. THIS. I AM HAVING THIS EXACT SAME ISSUE. EXACTLY.

oh god I'm just terrified mine's gonna suck and I'm accidentally gonna write something that's too similar and it'll be too late and why am I even doing this again?

So yeah, I totally get this.

*clears throat to start this again* we are all different. that does not mean any one person is better than any other. different. not better.
[identity profile] alphaflyer.livejournal.com on July 28th, 2013 04:57 am (UTC)
Everyone has their own voice. Lord knows how many "after New York" fics are out there. Has that ever stopped anyone? No. So why should this? Go for it, both of you!!! Go, Koren! Go, Inkvoices!

(Besides -- Steve/Tony??? Just sayin'.)
inkvoices: writers write[personal profile] inkvoices on July 28th, 2013 03:47 pm (UTC)
WE WILL WRITE :D

(I am vaguely loyal to the pairings that I write, but I will read all of the pairings and groupings and variations, because so, so many of them are in stories made of gold. There's a lot of Steve/Tony. So it goes that there's also a lot of good stories with Steve/Tony - numbers game.)
[identity profile] alphaflyer.livejournal.com on July 28th, 2013 04:21 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I just read one that turned into a Steve/Tony kinda halfway through (not advertised as such) that was very good. But -- numbers game -- I have only so much reading time in my life, so I tend to triage that ship out usually beforehand, unless someone I trust recs a story.
[identity profile] cybermathwitch.livejournal.com on July 28th, 2013 06:40 pm (UTC)
This is exactly why it took me so long to find this particular author - despite the fact that she has amazing relationships between Clint and Nat and between Pepper and Tony in most of her stuff, those aren't the romantic 'ships and I'd been scrolling right on by in favor of the ships I preferred. Which is a totally legit way to triage (I do that with both fanfic and with other books, for that matter) - but I was really REALLY glad when I was bored one night and clicked on these for curiosity's sake. She can make me laugh and cry on the same page and it's kind of grand.
[identity profile] alphaflyer.livejournal.com on July 28th, 2013 06:41 pm (UTC)
Does this author have a name? :-) Might want to give her a try.
[identity profile] cybermathwitch.livejournal.com on July 28th, 2013 06:47 pm (UTC)
http://archiveofourown.org/users/scifigrl47/pseuds/scifigrl47

I would recommend starting with "Tales of the Bots" (all the Tony and JARVIS and especially Dummy feels) - but her Toasterverse series is one of my very favorite stories out there, of any category (which... since the two relationships are one I feel meh about (S/T, and one I actively don't like Clint/Coulson) - is really saying something.
[identity profile] alphaflyer.livejournal.com on July 28th, 2013 06:50 pm (UTC)
Thanks! Will give her a shot later tonight, when Clint has killed that plot bunny that keeps hopping across my path.
inkvoices: fangirl[personal profile] inkvoices on July 28th, 2013 09:02 pm (UTC)
Bwahaha, I love how no one had even mentioned the name of this author until this point *grins*.

To give you an idea of why you should ignore the ships: she recently received a tumblr message from a reader asking if she could warn them before they started reading if hers were long stories full of sex or if they were about the characters, and I think the internet fell about laughing, because the length of time it takes two people to even kiss in her stories is ridiculous and wonderful, because she's too busy writing plots, and banter, and hilarity, and emotions between EVERYONE. And then when anyone does get around to doing anything even vaguely romantic you've had so much build up you really don't care what the ship is, just kiss already! But yet. One of my favourite authors. Go read. And then follow her on tumblr.
[identity profile] cybermathwitch.livejournal.com on July 28th, 2013 06:49 pm (UTC)
WE WILL!

(I would say "once more into the breach" but... not sure if that's a good idea for Pacific Rim fic!)
inkvoices: avengers:jrenner you[personal profile] inkvoices on July 28th, 2013 09:03 pm (UTC)
ONCE MORE INTO THE BREACH!!! LOL, yes, but, y'know, only once, and nuke that breech, yeah? *grins*.
[identity profile] cybermathwitch.livejournal.com on July 28th, 2013 06:43 pm (UTC)
:) Thanks. This is certainly what I keep needing to hear. Well, back to the Shatterdome for me!

(I can understand why people ship Steve/Tony, and I'm not actually opposed to it (and I can even totally buy that they're both into men and women), but I just can't get past feeling kind of lukewarm about it and meh. I have so many more feels about the two of them with other people, instead. Now, Steve/Tony/Pepper...)
[identity profile] cybermathwitch.livejournal.com on July 28th, 2013 06:48 pm (UTC)
::hugs:: Thank you.
I may need to stick this on a post-it over my desk.

inkvoices: avengers:assassins hug[personal profile] inkvoices on July 28th, 2013 03:43 pm (UTC)
LOL and I'm willing to bet that it's over the exact same fic.

YES it's I don't want to read it because then at least I can even if mine's similar it's not on purpose or even accidentally on purpose, with a side helping of I came too late to this party, the excellance has already happened.

BUT WE WILL KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON.
[identity profile] cybermathwitch.livejournal.com on July 28th, 2013 06:34 pm (UTC)
Yup. Definitely that one (I might be a little bit obsessed with her stories, I love them SO MUCH) and also at least one other person (well, and now you, as well! :D) who's specifically writing C/N.

But yes, keeping (mostly) calm and carrying on here, too!
inkvoices: writers write[personal profile] inkvoices on July 28th, 2013 09:05 pm (UTC)
Oh my gosh, where is the Clint/Natasha one? No, wait, don't tell me until I've finished writing mine. MUST STOP READING AND DO MORE WRITING.
http://lar_laughs.livejournal.com/: HP - to define is to limit[identity profile] lar_laughs.livejournal.com on July 28th, 2013 04:17 am (UTC)
we are all different. that does not mean any one person is better than any other. different. not better.

But hooray for so many cool fics that are coming out of the movie. As soon as the DVD comes out and I can finally watch it, I'll be excited to read YOUR story!
inkvoices: dr who:everyone is important[personal profile] inkvoices on July 28th, 2013 03:45 pm (UTC)
It's more... I want to read their fic, but then I'm scared that mine will accidentally on purpose use their ideas that will get lodged in my brain, so I can't read it, because there's will be so good that it will get lodged in my brain. But thanking you. I will be different, and try not to worry that I'll be different in a not as good way or a having ideas that aren't mine way :)

It's not the best film ever, but the worldbuilding cries out for fanfic and crossovers, heh.
http://lar_laughs.livejournal.com/: Heavy Dreamer[identity profile] lar_laughs.livejournal.com on July 28th, 2013 03:57 pm (UTC)
It's like Christmas! You can't open the gifts until Christmas morning or you'll ruin the surprise! As hard as it is to wait, when you're done, you'll have something to read!

A friend made me memorize that phrase years ago. If I hadn't, I never would have ventured forth into fandom. I most certainly would have never joined communities. I never would have friended YOU, specifically, because you blew my mind when I first met you.

And then add in the fact that we're all writing the same stuff! It's hard not to rethink our premises and ideas because of what we know other people are doing. I'd love to do an experiment but I think most people would bulk... I'd love it if all of B_C had an assignment to write a Clint/Natasha story using the same premise. How many of them would end up the same? How many wouldn't really be anything at all the same? Who we are dictates the story. Even using the same basic ideas and even very specific ideas, I think it becomes unnoticeable with the weight of all the other words combined.

I really wish I'd been able to see it while it was here in our theater. We get two weeks and then it's bye-bye movie! If I can get to a bigger city, I'll try to see it because I feel like I'm being left behind! I've tried sharing in the excitement as much as possible but all I think it did was give me more spoilers than I'm comfortable knowing about! Even I have a line drawn where I don't want to know everything. Oops! My own fault! But if I have to wait that long, I'll wait and then I'll just absorb all the fic and crossovers late!
inkvoices: avengers:assassins hug[personal profile] inkvoices on July 28th, 2013 09:23 pm (UTC)
I'm awful when it comes to reading. Maybe because I'm a fast reader, or at least that doesn't help. But I always want to read the things that have caught my attention right that very minute. Luckily I no longer get books for Christmas ;) (Mostly because very few people can keep track of my reading these days.)

I never would have friended YOU, specifically, because you blew my mind when I first met you. Um, what is this crazy? I just dabble in things. I'm not a big fic writer, or a big graphics maker, or anything. SO GLAD you joined in, because I would have missed out on you otherwise, and that would have been a crying shame *hugs*.

...I think that's a fascinating experiment. I nominate that this should be at least an ATTF, even if it's just a short story (or graphics) idea. I'd love to see what came out of it. And it would be an interesting way of seeing what our styles are compared to other creators.

When I was at uni it was a small uni town and Avengers was only on the local cinema for one week and I missed it because of a week long exam thing. (I was not a happy bunny about this!!!) So I had to run off to the big city ;) Yeah, it's awkward trying not to be spoiled. I think this is a big part of why I don't get involved in tv show fandoms as much, or rather US shows where they're at least a season ahead.
[identity profile] anuna-81.livejournal.com on July 28th, 2013 03:48 pm (UTC)
I have those moments too (not right now, but they happen and I'm so very familiar with them). And it doesn't help the "mine will suck" feelings I tend to get. But nowdays I usually make myself write, especially if I really really want to write something. Sucky or not, it's my story to tell! I'm sure yours will be great and I look forward to read it:)
inkvoices: writers write[personal profile] inkvoices on July 28th, 2013 09:09 pm (UTC)
I really need to make myself write more in general. I have piles of ideas, but I've finished hardly any of them this year. I flitter away towards the next, or end up reading lots of things, or making icons, or doing offline fandom things, or... and then nothing gets written. MUST WRITE! And thanking you *hugs*.
[identity profile] jedi-harkness.livejournal.com on July 29th, 2013 10:34 pm (UTC)
*hee* I got the e-mail you're speaking of, and I totally get what you're feeling. I haven't had a chance to read the fic yet, but I'm sure yours will turn out just as brilliant. *hugs*

I'm wondering if I'll even be able to write out the Torchwood fusion I'm chewing over, since I'm busy with other projects (including a post-MD fic that's getting close to novel-length).
inkvoices: torchwood:ianto smile[personal profile] inkvoices on August 1st, 2013 12:27 pm (UTC)
I love how everyone knows exactly which author I'm talking about LOL

Oh my gosh oh my gosh, Torchwood/Pacific Rim? WOULD BE AMAZING. You should absolutely write that! When you get chance ;)
[identity profile] jedi-harkness.livejournal.com on August 1st, 2013 04:20 pm (UTC)
I'm still giving Torchwood/Pacific Rim some serious thought. I was only able to see it in the theater once, so I'll have to wait for the DVD so I can see it again. I should still jot down notes for it, though. ;)
inkvoices: avengers:jane writing[personal profile] inkvoices on August 2nd, 2013 07:29 pm (UTC)
I can go off one viewing, but not it I want to be accurate to the source. I went off two viewings for Avengers though *grins* - a lot of quotes were viewed online!
